Tea Project Installation

This project is a particular favourite of mine. It began as an entry project for my Art Foundation at Manchester School Of Art, and became a final piece my for my Fine Art A Level. The topic given was ‘Protest’, a topic I deeply enjoyed exploring, examining especially its meaning to me personally.

The concept I ultimately based this piece around was that of (re)claiming a space, and taking (back) control of what it is used for. For example, taking a space that permitted or harboured harmful attitudes, and transforming it into space of growth and enrichment; where conversations could be had and distances between people and communities closed. This culminated in the installation A Space Laid For Tea, pictured.

This was an interactive piece, where strangers were encouraged to sit with me or each other and have a cup of tea and a chat. My research and experimentation throughout the project- posters, cards and drawings based around protest and collective action, are displayed as part of the installation.

This piece was originally performed in a small village, and I would love to revisit this project in a contrasting location, such as an urban centre, where perhaps invitations to closeness could be received differently, even warily.
